The maximum score on any given hole is determined by an equation using your handicap and the handicap of the hole you are playing.
All players, regardless of handicap, are allowed net double bogey ( 2 strokes) on each hole, IN ADDITION one is given an additional stroke(s) for each point of their handicap.
For instance:
If your handicap is 7, you will get net double bogey PLUS an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 7.
If your handicap is 17, you will get net double bogey PLUS an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 17.
If your handicap is 24, you will get net double bogey PLUS an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 thorough 18 AND an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 6 (18 + 6 = 24).
If your handicap is 30, you will get net double bogey PLUS an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 18 AND an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 12 (18 + 12 = 30).

.In the example above Susie Queue has a handicap of 23, therefore she gets net double bogey (2 strokes) on each hole PLUS an additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 18 PLUS and additional stroke on those holes labeled 1 through 5.
So, when Suzie blew up on hole # 5 we can see the stroke index for that hole is 2. Therefore she gets the net double bogey (2) that everyone gets PLUS 1 because the stroke index is between 1 and 18 PLUS 1 because she gets an additional stroke on those holes numbered 1 through 5, or 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 or 9.
When she had another bad hole on # 7 we see the stroke index is 16.
Therefore she gets the net double bogey (2) that everyone gets PLUS 1 because the stroke index is between 1 and 18. She would get an additional stroke for those holes labeled 1 through 5 but this hole is labeled 16 so 3 + 2 + 1 = 6
And, as an aside, the big number goes on the bottom and I was told the way I could remember is that Riverview ladies have big bottoms! :0
